The best month for them
Well, let’s start with the key month to catch them!
For us, the best month without hesitation is October. It is a month where they are very active, it is not so hot and the days are less sunny, it rains and currents form, removing the water and forming muddy clouds, thus not leaving the water so visible and getting closer to the surface or shore… The perfect climate for them.
Where to find them?
We can find walleye in each reservoir or river turning it into a different world, they have different waters, different soil, shores with little or a lot of vegetation, great depths or slight depth … We have to choose based on the characteristics that I detail below to Find them as soon as possible and not waste valuable fishing time in a place where there are none.
The perfect soil for walleye
These elusive fish mainly prefer slate soil, soils where they are full of large stones, submerged platforms, large submerged trees, bridges, submerged houses… Therefore, we have to be very observant.
A good trick, if we do not have a probe to see the bottom, the best thing is when the river or reservoir goes down, go for a walk along the shore and apart from finding you fishing equipment, we will find perfect places where they will be when the level of the river rises again.
Water. It is important to take references in front of the shore, for when we come and it is all covered by water, that we know exactly where that place was in front of the entire shore.
The depth at which we fish is the most important thing when it comes to fishing them. If you are fishing at a depth of 4 meters and the walleye are at a depth of 8 meters, it will be impossible for you to get a bite from them if you don’t get closer to where they are.
A good key factor in determining how deep you should fish is the color of the water. We will hardly ever find a band of walleye or one of them prowling with crystal clear waters at a depth of 4 meters, almost impossible if the sun is beating down on it.
If we find a day like this, like the one described above, it is better to fish at the bottom so that you can get closer to them and that you can get a bite. They against more sun and the more the water is crystal clear, the lower they will be, looking for the darkness.
On the other hand, if we come across a cloudy day, with the water not so crystal clear, and with current… It is the appropriate day for them! Do not hesitate to go out with all the fishing equipment to look for them, because the most possible is that you will get big bites because that is when they will be more active and there are more possibilities.
Lures for casting
As well said before, our friend the walleye, we are going to find her mainly at the bottom, which is where they will be most comfortable, unless the Alburnos are hanging around that area, and they dive to the surface to have a feast.
We recommend when they are suspended in the water at a height between 7 or 2 meters deep, to use a crankbait that can go down for example up to six meters deep, interspersing the speed of the take-up reel to act at the greatest depth or collect soft to fish between 2 or 4 meters. This way we will get big bites because our friends the alburnous are on the lookout.
If instead, they are flush with the bottom, it is best to use vinyls or the trick of the dead fish handled since its effectiveness is deadly.

Day or night?
For us, the best hours of the day are at night… Everyone goes to fish during the day, when they are most stopped, when they are further down, stuck between stones, bridges, trees, waiting for night to come to hunt.
The walleye is a fish that is mainly nocturnal. Her body is designed for the night, with large eyes that allow her to see everything in the dark waters of the night.
It is when we can find her prowling the banks looking for the little ones who come to her to seek refuge.
That’s when we mainly have to fish them thoroughly, with a sliding line bass, or with a false line bass with live or dead fish. We can use our appreciated tench, or when it is not the season for her, we can use the alburno or the blas…. These last two mentioned, it is forbidden to fish with them. If you are caught fishing with the alburno or the blas, the fine can be high, thus making our fishing day turn into a horrible night.
How can I catch them from a boat?
The best method to fish for walleye in a boat or boat is with the jigging fishing mode. This modality allows us to fish at the bottom, thus being able to tempt them for a long time, thus allowing large specimens to enter.
Especially if we use a probe, what to say… Pike perch insured. You will be able to reach places where no one could reach on foot, and you will be able to locate them immediately.
How is jigging fishing and what is it?
This fishing technique, called jigging, has its name from the type of lure used: the “jig”. It consists of a molded hook, usually of lead, shaped like a fish. The jigs are designed to recreate the vertical movement of a fish heading to the surface, which is why we also know the technique as “vertical fishing”.
What is jigging?
The modality consists of free throwing the lure towards the bottom and recovering it at a constant rate through the line and the movements of the rod, in this way the trajectory of a small fish towards the surface is simulated and serves as an attraction for catch big fish.
Despite its recent surge in popularity, jigging is one of the oldest fishing techniques in the world, with origins that can be traced back to Japan and Polynesia for hundreds of years.
As a general rule, it is carried out at depths from 30 to 250 meters and in areas where there are considerable differences in depths, an abundance of food for small fish and therefore, the constant presence of large predators like our friends.
The different designs
Without going any further in the designs, we can establish two groups: hard and soft. The latter consist of a large leaded head and a simple hook, into which a small silicone body is threaded. They provide realistic movement and are very effective for slow-eating fish such as walleye or our friend Sirulo. However, they are less effective at the bottom, sink slowly, and exhibit great resistance to currents.
Hard jigs, on the other hand, look like knife blades, can be long or short, and unlike soft jigs, they drop quickly and provide great results in depth. Depending on the weight distribution in the rear or central area, and the asymmetric nature of its profile, they will be better for fishing one type of fish or another.

Also, not only are they fished for walleye by haul, but there are other ways of being able to fish them such as fishing for walleye thoroughly or like fishing for walleye with dead fish thoroughly.
One of the best months that I have not named is to fish for walleye in November as they are also very active this month and eager to put something in their mouths.
Remember that you also have to have a suitable walleye fishing equipment to better enjoy the fish and its fight. We recommend the Tatula rod as it is perfect from my point of view to fish them.
We hope that these little tricks will come in handy for you so that you can catch them better on your next fishing trip and that you can share your catch with us.
tips for walleye fishing
The walleye, with the scientific name Sander Lucioperca, is a type of fish totally related to the perch. Known for being a predatory species, it belongs to the Percid family and has an elongated body, with a fairly small head, as well as greenish tones as the predominant color on the back , with a silver-colored belly and several pinkish stripes that cross his whole body vertically.
It has two dorsal fins , of which the first, the front , has spines to protect itself. Although its mouth is small, unlike its eyes, which are its most characteristic feature due to its large size, it has many teeth and very sharp . Thanks to its teeth, it is capable of eating small and medium-sized fish despite not being an excessively large creature. Its maximum length, in fact, is about 80 centimeters and the highest weight seen in captured specimens is around 6 kilograms . On the other hand, it can reach up to 20 years of life.
Although it is a native animal of eastern Europe , it is usually found inhabiting the middle reaches of any river in central and eastern Spain after its arrival through rivers from the French region. It is classified as part of an invasive exotic species in our territory , since its colonizing nature and its danger put the other species in our waters at risk.
Finding it is something simple for those who move through the eastern part of the country . It is common to come across specimens of zander in waters with strong currents, especially in spring, when they move to reproduce and give way to spawning; however, he is also beginning to frequent those that are quiet.

Knowing the species
This beautiful fish belongs to the Percid family and in Spain, it was illegally introduced into the Aragonese area of Mequinenza. To this day and without entering into discussions of whether it should be among us or not, we can find it much more spread over numerous basins of our country where it has already acclimatized perfectly. It is worth saying that zander can be fished in areas of the peninsula as diverse as Castilla y León or Valencia, with the areas of Aragon and Catalonia being the ones with the largest populations.
Its voracity and rapid growth, due to its activity throughout the year, meaning that it can reach weights of up to ten kilos in our country. Once out of the water, we will be surprised by the beautiful livery of these specimens. Their silver, greenish and gold colors, along with black transverse stripes in the males, appear before our eyes with an unequaled beauty.
A very important feature is its characteristic eyes, which allow it to see in the black night, being the most fearsome predator when the Sun falls over the horizon. Dawn and dusk are the best times of the day to fish it.
His fight may not be his strong point, something very criticized by many fishermen, but those who have not fished with light equipment do not know what is lost. He will sell his defeat dearly. And if we find them moving on banks, fun is guaranteed with constant bites, since it is not a species that misses the opportunity to put a well-presented lure in its mouth.
She likes to live and hunt in the depths and we will find her comfortable from 3-4 meters deep, especially on sandy or mixed beds (sand, pebbles and rocks). Only in spring does it approach shallower shores, when it spawns and is the best time to fish it from the shore if we do not have a boat, since on those days it is also particularly aggressive against lures and males acquire a lovely coloring. Fishing them at those times on beaches and quiet recula is a pleasure for the spinning fisherman.
Gear up for the occasion
Obviously, we can use fishing rods, reels, and artificial lures for bass and pike, and they will give us catches. But we will get more out of a team according to this species.
Starting with the rod, whether we fish from shore or onboard, light graphite or carbon rod of 2.10 meters of medium or medium/heavy action is the best option to enjoy in combat.
A 2500 or 3000 size fishing reel like the Okuma Flame reel, loaded with 0.25 fluorocarbon line or braided line that resists about 8 kilos will be more than enough for the zander that inhabits our waters.

And as for the lures, nothing better than vinyl. Long bladed minnows and crankbaits will give us a lot of catches, as well as undulating, spinnerbaits, or jigs. But vinyl is the most comfortable option for catching fish that like to live on the bottom.
The most effective will be the classic pikies and twisters, such as Hart’s shad or Yokozuna’s grubs, mounted with sinker heads weighing between 7 and 14 grams.
The colorations will vary according to the color of the waters, but taking into account that we will always fish it in the bottoms and in hours of low light, the orange, yellowish and white colors will be the best, but without forgetting the bluish ones, the perch and pearl with dark back on the pikies.
But today the world of vinyl is growing by leaps and bounds and we can also expand our arsenal of vinyl with realistic shads, crabs, tubes, or creatures that will give us numerous captures.
The best way to use these lures for walleye is by casting the lure at the chosen area. We will let it go down to the bottom and collect slowly giving some light touches of the wrist so that the vinyl gives more appearance of life, but always very close to the bottom.
We can also pick up grubs and other vinyls by hopping on the bottom, being slow but subtle fishing, always attentive to the delicate bite of this fish to make a good dive.
Who wakes up early…
The classic saying is especially true when fishing for walleye. If I had to stay with an hour, that would be at dawn. If they are active they will not take long to enter our lures, either in a river or in a reservoir. Being in the water an hour before sunrise and fishing until around 10 or 11 in the morning, we make sure of a few bites if the walleye are active.
Of course, we must not neglect at all the magical time of sunset and even the night. In the most absolute darkness, they will enter the lures very well thanks to the incredible vision of their eyes.
Save time and money
If we have a boat, a kayak, or even a fishing duck or catamaran, we will save time, because we will reach the fishing areas that are further away from the busiest areas and therefore, more punished faster. And money, because being fishing where we must use the lures inspecting the funds, the hooks from the shore will be almost unrecoverable while on board we will have more options to recover them, especially if we use the classic but effective invention of the puppy.
Where to direct our steps?
Today we can find walleye in numerous rivers and reservoirs. The various hydrological structures have transported many specimens to other basins, in addition to illegal introductions.
There are very good rivers like the lower areas of the Cinca, the Segre, the Ebro and the Júcar. Specimens have appeared in emblematic rivers such as the Guadalquivir, the Tagus or the Duero, although the populations are still not as important as in the previous ones.
We can also find reservoirs with fantastic populations. In Aragon we have Mequinenza-Caspe, Caspe II, La Sotonera, and Mediano where there are stable populations. In Catalonia it is also widespread: Ribarroja, Flix, Santa Ana, Oliana, La Baells, Boadella, and Sant Llorenç de Montgai are the best reservoirs.
In Valencia, we will find them in the Cortés reservoir and in Cofrentes. And of course, in other reservoirs on the peninsula, it has acclimatized perfectly. Buendía and La Cuerda del Pozo are great places to spend a few days fishing with guarantees.
Now there is no excuse for not taking advantage of the spring with new species and trying to catch such a beautiful fish … Despite being a species without any legislation due to its alien nature by the administration (except in the Mequinenza-Caspe reservoir)
From here I break a spear in its favor and in that of our sport because it is respected in certain places where if we did not fish walleye, we would not fish at all and a lot of income is generated thanks to the fans that move in search of it. If we kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, then we will regret it. But of course, do not introduce it in more areas outside of where they already are.
